Elementary Art: Pre-K thru 5th Grade The elementary years are full of joy, excitement, and imagination, which makes art so much fun! My approach to teaching elementary students allows the child's vivid imagination and curious nature to flourish in their artwork.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the idea that the student is the Artist, and the classroom is their Studio. Students are offered real choices to respond to their own ideas and interests in Art. Students are able to explore their own ideas and choose the materials that will allow them to best achieve their vision.
The classroom is organized into smaller “centers,” where students find materials and tools for art making. Students are responsible for setting up their workspace, generating an idea, and making a plan to carry out their idea. Students often develop their ideas based upon their experiences, interests, and passions.
Students are able to work independently at their own pace. Art History, along with new concepts, skills, and techniques are introduced in short demonstrations or discussions at the start of each class. When a work of art is complete, students reflect and share their ideas using an artist statement.
